U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Japan on Monday as part of his ongoing Asia tour, with expectations rising that his upcoming meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping could bring an end to the prolonged U.S.–China trade war.
Speaking aboard Air Force One en route from Malaysia, Trump expressed optimism about reaching a breakthrough deal with Beijing. “I have a lot of respect for President Xi, and I think we’re going to come away with a deal,” he told reporters, adding that he might extend his trip to include a possible meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
During his visit, Trump is scheduled to meet with Japan’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, on Tuesday. The U.S. president will also visit Emperor Naruhito and deliver a speech aboard the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, docked at the U.S. Naval Base in Yokosuka.
The visit marks Trump’s first meeting with Prime Minister Takaichi, who recently took office. Both leaders are expected to discuss the strengthening of Japan–U.S. relations, regional security, and ongoing trade partnerships amid a rapidly shifting Indo-Pacific landscape.
Trump’s arrival in Japan comes at a pivotal moment in global diplomacy, as Washington, Beijing, and Tokyo navigate economic competition, strategic alliances, and efforts to maintain regional stability.
