Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday led family members, friends, and dignitaries to honor the memory of his late wife and former First Lady, Stella Obasanjo, during a service marking 20 years since her passing.
The memorial, held at the Chapel of Christ the King of Glory within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, drew notable guests including the couple’s only son, Olumuyiwa (Muyiwa) Obasanjo, Stella’s younger brother John Abebe, and former Ogun State governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun.
Speaking briefly to journalists after the service, the former president described his late wife as a woman who lived a life devoted to service, saying, “We came to celebrate a life of service.”
In a heartfelt tribute, Olumuyiwa Obasanjo reflected on his late mother’s enduring influence, describing her as a loving yet disciplined woman whose values continue to guide him.
“I have no doubt missed my late mother. I have missed her laughter, kindness, and all the advice and life lessons she shared. Her legacy will live on,” he said. “She was caring and protective as an only child, but she was also strict and would not tolerate any deviation. The knowledge she imparted to me is still there, and it has proved quite useful.”
The event served as a moment of reflection and celebration of Stella Obasanjo’s legacy of compassion, leadership, and public service, two decades after her passing.
