A tragic shooting at a large weekend party in southeastern North Carolina has left two people dead and several others critically injured, according to Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a total of 13 individuals were shot during the incident, which occurred late Friday night in a rural area outside Maxton — about 150 kilometres southwest of Raleigh, near the South Carolina border.
Homicide investigators and other law enforcement officials were deployed to the scene, where they began gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. Authorities reported that more than 150 people fled the area before officers arrived.
“There is no current threat to the community as this appears to have been an isolated incident,” the Sheriff’s Office said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or details about possible suspects. No arrests have been made as of Saturday, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting or those present at the scene to contact investigators.
The deadly incident has sparked renewed concern about rising gun violence in the United States, particularly in rural communities where large gatherings often lack adequate security presence.
