President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major shake-up in Nigeria’s military hierarchy, announcing the appointment of new Service Chiefs in a move aimed at strengthening the nation’s security architecture.

In the latest appointments, General Olufemi Oluyede has been named the new Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. Major-General W. Shaibu takes over as the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke assumes office as the Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas has been appointed as the Chief of Naval Staff.

The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.

The changes were announced in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare. According to the statement, the reorganization underscores the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security framework.

“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expresses profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the other Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” the statement read.

President Tinubu also charged the newly appointed Service Chiefs to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and unity within the Armed Forces, urging them to justify the confidence reposed in their leadership.

It was noted that the new Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, had only recently assumed the position of Chief of Army Staff following the passing of General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja last year.

All the new appointments take immediate effect.
