Germany has demolished the cooling towers of the decommissioned Gundremmingen nuclear power plant in Bavaria, marking another step in the country’s ongoing nuclear phaseout. The two massive towers, weighing a combined total of around 56,000 tonnes of concrete, were brought down in a controlled explosion at noon on Saturday.

The Gundremmingen plant, located in southern Germany, had been a defining landmark in the Bavarian town for nearly six decades. Beyond its symbolic presence, it played a key role in boosting the local economy and providing thousands of jobs over the years.

Saturday’s demolition is part of Germany’s broader Energiewende — the national energy transition policy aimed at shifting from nuclear and fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The Gundremmingen facility, along with the Brokdorf and Grohnde nuclear power plants, was officially shut down in December 2021 as part of this transition.

The controlled demolition signifies not just the physical end of an era for the Gundremmingen site, but also Germany’s continued commitment to phasing out nuclear power in favor of sustainable alternatives.
