Law enforcement officers opened fire on Thursday evening after a driver backed a U-Haul truck into a line of police officers outside the U.S. Coast Guard base in Alameda, California. The confrontation occurred near the site of a day-long protest linked to what was initially planned as an immigration enforcement surge across the San Francisco Bay Area.

According to eyewitnesses, chaos broke out when the driver suddenly accelerated the truck toward the officers. One witness, identified as Villaroman, recounted the dramatic moment, saying, “He just hit the gas and sped towards them. And that’s when they opened fire — about 20 to 30 rounds.”

Authorities confirmed that multiple shots were fired at the vehicle after the driver allegedly ignored commands to stop and posed an immediate threat to officers on the scene. The area around the Coast Guard base was swiftly locked down as investigators secured the perimeter and assessed potential injuries.

As of now, officials have not released the identity or condition of the driver, and it remains unclear whether the incident was connected to the nearby demonstrations. Law enforcement agencies, including local police and federal officers, are conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Alameda Coast Guard base and surrounding roads were temporarily closed while emergency personnel responded to the situation. Authorities are expected to release more details as the investigation unfolds.
