A tragic accident has claimed multiple lives in Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, after a Dangote truck loaded with cement lost control and rammed into several roadside shops on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred near the popular Holy Trinity Church along the Owo–Akungba–Ikare expressway, throwing the entire community into mourning.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck reportedly lost control while descending the hill near Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), before crashing into nearby stalls and pedestrians. The impact of the collision destroyed several shops and vehicles, leaving a scene of devastation and panic.
Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, said that at least eight people lost their lives, including five males, two females, and one male child. He noted that the truck, which was carrying cement, lost control after hitting a barricade placed in front of the university.
“The truck ran into a barricade and lost control, resulting in the crash. No fewer than eight people were killed, comprising five males, two females, and one male child,” Ibitoye stated.
The tragic event sparked chaos in the area as residents and university students rushed to the scene to assist in rescue efforts. Emergency responders, including the FRSC, police, and local volunteers, worked tirelessly to evacuate victims and clear the wreckage.
This is not the first time Akungba Akoko has witnessed a fatal truck accident, raising renewed concerns about road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations on the Owo–Ikare route, which is known for its steep slopes and heavy truck traffic.
Authorities have urged transport companies to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles and for drivers to exercise caution, especially in densely populated areas.
