A Nigerian legal practitioner has clarified a common misconception surrounding divorce settlements in Nigeria, stating that under Nigerian law, a woman is not entitled to any portion of her husband’s property unless she can prove she made a financial contribution to acquiring it.
Speaking on the legal realities of marriage dissolution, the lawyer explained that unlike what is often portrayed in Western media or Hollywood films, Nigeria’s legal system does not grant automatic property rights to either spouse after a divorce.
According to the lawyer, “Under Nigerian law, if a woman divorces her husband, she isn’t entitled to any share of his property unless she can prove that she contributed financially to acquiring it. Nigeria isn’t Hollywood.”
This clarification sheds light on the Matrimonial Causes Act and property ownership under Nigerian law — an area often misunderstood by couples. It also underscores the importance of joint property documentation and legal agreements for spouses who wish to ensure fairness in the event of a separation.
