A tragic incident unfolded early Monday at Hong Kong International Airport when an Emirates Boeing 747 cargo plane arriving from Dubai veered off the runway after landing, colliding with a ground security vehicle and dragging it into the sea.
The accident claimed the lives of two airport security personnel, marking the deadliest airport incident in Hong Kong in more than 25 years.
According to officials from the Airport Authority Hong Kong, the cargo jet lost control shortly after touchdown and struck a security patrol vehicle stationed near the runway. The impact forced both the vehicle and the aircraft partially into the surrounding waters.
“Both airport security staff were pulled from the water without signs of breathing,” said Steven Yiu, Executive Director of Airport Operations. “One was confirmed dead at the scene, while the second succumbed to injuries later at the hospital.”
Fortunately, all four crew members aboard the Emirates Boeing 747 survived the crash, though the aircraft was left partially submerged. Emergency teams swiftly responded to the scene, closing the affected runway and initiating an investigation into the cause of the disaster.
Authorities have begun examining multiple factors — including weather conditions, runway surface state, aircraft technical performance, and crew actions — to determine what led to the fatal accident.
