A major drone strike targeted the Sverdlov Plant in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region, Russia, overnight, sparking multiple explosions and fires across the area. The plant is one of Russia’s largest manufacturers of explosives.
According to regional governor Gleb Nikitin, the attack occurred around 2:30 a.m. local time, when residents began hearing loud blasts and seeing bright flashes in the sky. Witnesses reported between 25 and 30 explosions within an hour, with several car alarms triggered by the shockwaves.
Governor Nikitin confirmed that Russian air defense units intercepted around 20 drones in the industrial zone during the assault. “Our air defenses repelled the attack, but falling debris caused several fires in the private sector,” he said. Emergency services quickly responded and extinguished the blazes.
One person was reportedly injured in the incident, while residential buildings and a nearby gas station sustained minor damage, including broken windows and roof damage. Fortunately, no significant damage was recorded at the industrial facility itself, authorities confirmed.
The incident marks one of the most significant drone attacks reported in the Nizhny Novgorod region, adding to growing concerns over the expanding reach of aerial assaults inside Russia’s territory.
