Russia carried out one of its most intense attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine early Sunday, unleashing hundreds of drones and missiles that left at least four people dead and dozens more injured.

According to Ukraine’s military, Moscow launched 595 drones and 48 missiles overnight, with air defences managing to shoot down 568 drones and 43 missiles. The strikes, which lasted for more than 12 hours, were primarily aimed at the capital city, Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that four people, including a child, were killed in the assault. Two of the victims died at a cardiology clinic in Kyiv. At least 80 others were wounded, and significant damage was reported to residential buildings, factories, and energy facilities.

The scale of the attack prompted neighbouring Poland to temporarily close its airspace near two southeastern cities, with its air force scrambling fighter jets until the threat subsided.

Russia’s defence ministry described the assault as a “massive strike” using long-range air and sea-based weapons and drones, claiming its intended targets were Ukrainian military infrastructure, including airfields. However, despite Moscow’s denials of targeting civilians, thousands of non-combatants have been killed and residential areas devastated since the war began.

The latest assault highlights the continued escalation of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis facing the region.
