Popular Nigerian broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat has faulted former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his choice of words in a goodwill message to the newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

Hamzat argued that Obi’s reference to the monarch as “My Dear Brother” amounted to disrespect towards the Yoruba people and Ibadan indigenes, stressing that traditional rulers deserve titles and honor befitting their status.

The controversy began after Peter Obi extended his congratulations to the Olubadan following his official coronation on Friday, 26th September, where he referred to the new monarch as “My Dear Brother.” While some Nigerians saw the message as a simple gesture of respect and familiarity, others, including Hamzat, considered it culturally inappropriate.

The remark has since generated mixed reactions across social media and public discourse, with some defending Obi’s statement as harmless and well-intentioned, while others insist that traditional institutions should be addressed with utmost reverence. The debate reflects the sensitivity surrounding cultural respect, leadership, and language in Nigeria’s diverse society.
