Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to set up a team of medical experts to evaluate the health condition of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The committee, which is expected to comprise between eight and ten doctors, must include a cardiologist, a neurologist, and the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Abuja. Justice Omotosho ruled that the panel has eight days to submit its findings to the court.
The judge further instructed the medical team to visit the Department of State Services (DSS) medical facility to determine whether it has the capacity to meet Kanu’s health needs. He also granted the committee the liberty to use any hospital across the country for their investigation.
This order comes after conflicting medical recommendations were presented to the court by the DSS and Kanu’s private doctors regarding his current health status. The court will decide, based on the NMA committee’s report, whether to transfer Kanu to the National Hospital for further treatment.
