Tension erupted at the Tejuosho Shopping Complex in Yaba, Lagos State, after police officers allegedly fired tear gas to disperse protesting traders on Monday.
According to eyewitnesses, the traders had gathered earlier in the day to demonstrate against prolonged power outages, which they said were crippling their businesses and making daily operations nearly impossible.
The protest, which reportedly began peacefully, quickly descended into chaos when security operatives attempted to break up the gathering. In the process, a lady fainted after inhaling tear gas, drawing concern and panic among fellow demonstrators.
Shops in the area were forced to shut down temporarily as traders and customers fled the scene to avoid the escalating tension.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but videos circulating on social media show crowds scattering as clouds of tear gas filled the air.
The development has sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians criticizing the use of force against citizens protesting basic infrastructure issues like electricity supply.
