Hermeto Pascoal, the celebrated Brazilian musician hailed worldwide for his genius and collaborations with jazz great Miles Davis, has died at the age of 89, his family confirmed on Saturday.

Known affectionately as “The Sorcerer” for his extraordinary ability to create music from virtually anything — from traditional instruments to everyday objects — Pascoal’s death marks the end of an era in global jazz and Brazilian music.

In a statement shared on his official Instagram account, his family wrote: “With serenity and love, we announce that Hermeto Pascoal has passed on to the spiritual realm, surrounded by family and fellow musicians. At the very moment of his passing, his Group was on stage — just as he would have wished: making sound and music.”

The tribute encouraged fans to honor his legacy by playing a single note — whether on an instrument, through song, or even from a household object — and offering it “to the universe.”

Born in Brazil’s northeastern Alagoas state, Pascoal rose to international fame for his virtuosity, improvisation, and fearless experimentation. His collaborations with Miles Davis in the 1970s cemented his reputation as a boundary-breaking composer and performer.

Fellow Brazilian artist Caetano Veloso paid tribute, describing Pascoal as “one of the highest points in the history of music in Brazil.” Despite acknowledging past disagreements, Veloso said, “Today we bid farewell to a genius.”

Hermeto Pascoal leaves behind a timeless legacy of innovation, creativity, and inspiration that transcends borders and generations.
