Tension flared on Irhirhi Road in Benin City, Edo State, after a heated confrontation broke out between a man and a group of police officers. The officers, reportedly driving a mini bus, allegedly rammed into the man’s car from behind in an attempt to force him to stop.
According to eyewitnesses, the officers suspected the driver of being an internet fraudster, popularly known as a “Yahoo boy.” However, after confirming he was not involved in such activities, the officers allegedly tried to leave the scene without taking responsibility for the damage caused.
The incident escalated when the driver confronted the officers, blocking their vehicle to prevent them from fleeing. His car bumper was visibly damaged in the collision, sparking outrage among residents who gathered at the scene.
The development has further fueled public frustration over frequent cases of harassment, profiling, and misconduct involving security operatives in Nigeria. Many locals called for accountability, stressing that law enforcement agencies must carry out their duties without violating citizens’ rights or damaging their property.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
