President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, just two days after Giuliani was hospitalized following a car accident in New Hampshire.
The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States, awarded to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the nation’s prosperity, values, security, or global peace.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump praised Giuliani as “the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot.” He added that details regarding the time and location of the award ceremony will be released soon.
Giuliani, who served as New York City mayor from 1994 to 2001, gained international recognition for his leadership during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, earning him the nickname “America’s Mayor.”
In more recent years, Giuliani has remained a close ally of Trump, serving as his attorney during efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election. Despite controversies surrounding his political and legal battles, Trump’s announcement underscores the former president’s enduring loyalty to Giuliani.
The decision to honor Giuliani with the Medal of Freedom is likely to spark debate, given his polarizing role in American politics over the past decade. Nonetheless, for Trump and his supporters, the move reflects recognition of Giuliani’s decades-long public service and his unwavering loyalty.
