Russia unleashed a large-scale assault on Ukraine early Saturday, killing one person, injuring at least 24 others, and leaving widespread damage to infrastructure and residential areas, according to Ukrainian officials.
In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, three children were among the injured, Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed. The attack also cut off power to about 25,000 residents after strikes damaged energy facilities. Local utility operators said repair work was underway to restore electricity to affected neighborhoods.
President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the assault targeted 14 regions across Ukraine, with Russian forces deploying more than 500 drones and 45 missiles.
“It is absolutely clear that Moscow used the time meant for preparing a leaders-level meeting to organize new massive attacks,” Zelensky said, while urging Western allies to impose tougher sanctions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors.
The sweeping strikes underscore the intensity of Moscow’s ongoing campaign against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure, with Zaporizhzhia once again bearing the brunt of hostilities.
