A violent confrontation broke out in the Mandilas area of Lagos Island on Wednesday, leading to the death of one person. The incident, which occurred around 11 a.m. at Balogun Market, initially sparked fears of a tribal clash. However, the Lagos State Police Command has dismissed such claims, clarifying that it was a fight between hoodlums and not an ethnic conflict.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, said in a statement that the confrontation involved two men identified as Ebuka Adindu, from Abia State, and Sodiq Ibrahim, from Kogi State. During the altercation, Adindu fatally stabbed Ibrahim. In a shocking turn, Adindu also stabbed himself on the shoulder and collapsed. He is currently in police custody at the hospital, receiving treatment under tight security.
The police confirmed that there was no damage to property or harm to traders and residents within Balogun Market during the incident. Authorities assured the public that calm has been restored, and commercial activities in the area have resumed without disruption.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged Lagosians to remain law-abiding and avoid spreading misinformation. He emphasized that the state remains peaceful and that investigations are ongoing to ensure justice is served once Adindu recovers.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns over hoodlum-related violence in Lagos markets, but police stress there is no cause for fear or panic among residents and traders.
