The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended train operations on the Abuja–Kaduna route until further notice following Tuesday’s derailment incident. NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the suspension while addressing journalists in Abuja just hours after the incident.
Opeifa explained that technical experts from the NRC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and other relevant agencies, are currently at the derailment site to conduct a full investigation. He dismissed speculation about the trains being in poor condition and assured the public that immediate steps are being taken to restore safe operations.
The NRC chief also revealed that refunds have already been initiated for all passengers affected by the derailment. During his briefing, he met with some of the passengers at Asham Station and Idu Train Station in Abuja to reassure them of the corporation’s commitment to safety and passenger welfare.
According to Opeifa, six passengers sustained minor injuries in the incident but have since received treatment. However, the exact number of passengers onboard at the time of the derailment is yet to be confirmed.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor remains one of Nigeria’s most vital transport routes, and the suspension of service has raised concerns among commuters who rely heavily on the line. Authorities say operations will only resume once safety is fully guaranteed.
