A captured American-made M113 armored personnel carrier (APC) has been spotted in action in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, now bearing both Russian and U.S. flags. The sight of the Cold War–era vehicle, originally supplied to Ukraine by Western allies, highlights the complexities of the ongoing conflict where captured equipment often changes hands on the battlefield.
The M113, widely used by NATO countries and provided to Kyiv as part of military aid packages, has been a key asset in Ukraine’s defensive operations. However, its appearance under Russian control not only underscores the intensity of battles in Zaporizhzhia but also carries symbolic weight.

By flying both Russian and U.S. flags, Russian forces appear to be sending a pointed message about Western involvement in the war.

The Zaporizhzhia front remains one of the most heavily contested areas of the conflict, with both sides deploying heavy artillery, drones, and armored vehicles in an effort to gain ground. For Russia, showcasing captured Western equipment serves both as propaganda and as a demonstration of battlefield gains. For Ukraine and its allies, it is a reminder of the risks involved in supplying advanced weapons and vehicles to a frontline war zone.
