Protests broke out in Syria’s southern Suwayda region as supporters of Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, a prominent Druze spiritual leader, rallied against the Syrian government while openly displaying Israeli flags.

The demonstrators called for the “right to self-determination,” a move that underscores growing tensions between Damascus and sections of the Druze community. Witnesses reported that protesters waved both Druze and Israeli flags while chanting slogans rejecting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s rule.

The rare sight of Israeli flags on Syrian soil has drawn international attention, highlighting the complexity of alliances and rivalries in the war-torn country. Israel has long been accused by Damascus of fueling unrest in the region, but Friday’s protests openly signaled solidarity with the Jewish state.

Al-Hijri, a respected cleric in Suwayda, has increasingly been at odds with the central government, accusing authorities of marginalizing the Druze population. His supporters’ public call for autonomy further raises questions about the future stability of the province, which has largely remained outside the full control of Damascus throughout the Syrian conflict.
