BEIRUT, Lebanon — Ali Larijani, Iran’s newly appointed national security adviser and secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, arrived in Beirut on Wednesday to a hero’s welcome from Hezbollah supporters.
Greeted with chants of “At your command, Nasrallah”, crowds waved Iranian and Hezbollah flags alongside portraits of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and former Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.
The high-profile visit underscores Tehran’s continued influence in Lebanon, particularly as Hezbollah navigates internal political battles. Lebanese media reported that Larijani carried messages from Tehran urging Hezbollah to maintain coordination with the Lebanese government.
His arrival was framed as part of broader regional maneuvering — aimed at building leverage for future negotiations and increasing pressure on Israel to withdraw from contested Lebanese territories.

Addressing supporters upon his arrival, Larijani declared, “The suffering of the Lebanese people is our suffering, and we will always stand by them.” Over the coming days, he is set to hold meetings with Lebanon’s president, parliament speaker, prime minister, and other top officials.

The trip comes on the heels of a contentious parliamentary vote in Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah — a move staunchly opposed by Iran. Senior Iranian adviser Ali Akbar Velayati dismissed the disarmament proposal as “a dream that will not come true.”

In response, Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry condemned Velayati’s remarks, calling them “blatant and unacceptable interference” in the nation’s internal affairs. The ministry also urged Iran to focus on addressing its own domestic needs rather than involving itself in Lebanese politics.
Larijani’s visit highlights the delicate and often tense intersection of Lebanon’s internal politics with Iran’s broader regional agenda, as both allies and opponents brace for the next chapter in the country’s political struggle.
