VIDEO: Large Tornado Touches Down Near Watertown, South Dakota

A powerful tornado touched down near Watertown, South Dakota, on Sunday evening, sending residents scrambling for safety as the storm carved a path across parts of northeastern South Dakota.

The National Weather Service (NWS) quickly issued a Tornado Warning for northeastern Hamlin County and southeastern Codington County, urging people in the storm’s path to seek immediate shelter.

Videos shared on social media show the large twister moving steadily across open land, with dark clouds looming overhead and debris visibly swirling near the ground. The tornado has drawn widespread attention online, as concerned residents and storm chasers posted real-time footage of the funnel cloud’s movement.

The warning from the NWS office in Aberdeen remains in effect until 7:30 PM CDT. Authorities are urging all residents in the affected areas to take the threat seriously and move to a safe location, such as a basement or interior room, away from windows and exterior walls.

There are no confirmed reports of injuries or significant damage at this time, but emergency services are on high alert as the storm continues to develop. Weather experts warn that conditions remain favorable for further tornado activity, and residents across the region should monitor updates closely and remain prepared for fast-changing weather.
