Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, was forced to cancel dozens of flights on Monday after a major cyberattack paralyzed its internal systems, sending shockwaves through the country’s aviation sector.

The disruption, which unfolded at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, left departure boards flashing red as scheduled flights were grounded, affecting thousands of passengers at the height of the Russian holiday travel season.

A pro-Ukrainian hacking collective has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, prompting immediate concern from top Russian officials. The Kremlin acknowledged the gravity of the situation, with prosecutors launching a criminal investigation into what they confirmed was a targeted cyber intrusion.

“This is a wake-up call,” said senior lawmaker Anton Gorelkin, emphasizing the broader implications of the digital breach. “We must not forget that the war against our country is being waged on all fronts, including the digital one. And I do not rule out that the ‘hacktivists’ who claimed responsibility for the incident are in the service of unfriendly states.”
