Epping has once again become the center of a heated national debate as thousands of protesters and counter-protesters gathered outside the Bell Hotel, where asylum seekers are currently being housed. The latest wave of demonstrations has intensified following the recent arrest of a resident on serious charges, sparking public outcry and reigniting calls for the facility’s closure.

An estimated 300 to 400 anti-migrant protesters assembled near the hotel, many carrying St George’s flags and signs bearing slogans such as “Protect our kids.” Their message was clear: they are demanding the immediate closure of the Bell Hotel amid concerns over safety and immigration policy.

Tensions at the site have been simmering since July 13, when Hadush Kebatu, a 41-year-old asylum seeker from Ethiopia, was arrested and later charged with sexual assault, harassment, and inciting a minor to engage in sexual activity. He has denied all charges and remains in custody.

In response to the anti-migrant demonstration, a significantly larger group of around 2,000 counter-protesters marched from the town’s train station to a designated protest area near the hotel.

United under banners reading “Unity is strength” and “Stand up to racism,” they chanted, “Say it loud, say it clear — refugees are welcome here,” emphasizing solidarity with asylum seekers and advocating for compassion in immigration policy.

The protest atmosphere was charged but closely monitored, with police officers deployed in large numbers to maintain order and physically separate the two groups. Authorities confirmed that despite the emotionally charged scenes and occasional scuffles in previous protests, the situation was largely contained.

As some anti-migrant demonstrators sang along to patriotic music like Rule, Britannia!, the divide in public opinion was on full display. While one side pushed for stricter immigration control and the removal of asylum seekers from residential areas, the other stood firm in defending refugee rights and inclusivity.

The Bell Hotel in Essex has become more than just a temporary shelter — it is now a flashpoint in the broader national debate over immigration, safety, and community integration. As investigations into the criminal case proceed, both sides show no signs of backing down, and the situation in Epping remains tense but pivotal.
