Thousands of Malaysians flooded the streets of Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim amid growing public frustration over soaring living costs and unfulfilled reform promises.

The protest, marked by chants of “Turun Anwar” (Step Down Anwar), saw demonstrators clad in black shirts and headbands marching through the capital before gathering at Independence Square to hear from leading opposition figures.

Authorities estimated the crowd at over 18,000—one of the largest public mobilizations since Anwar assumed office in November 2022. The protest reflects mounting discontent over his administration’s economic policies and perceived backtracking on key reform pledges.

Critics have taken aim at recent fiscal measures introduced by Anwar’s government, including an expanded sales and service tax and adjustments to subsidies—moves that many fear will burden ordinary Malaysians and drive up the cost of living.

In response, the prime minister this week rolled out a series of economic relief efforts, including direct cash assistance, increased support for low-income households, and a vow to reduce fuel prices. However, these initiatives appear to have done little to ease tensions.

Beyond economic concerns, Anwar is also facing scrutiny over his government’s commitment to judicial independence and anti-corruption reforms.

Controversy erupted after prosecutors dropped graft charges against several figures aligned with the ruling coalition, and delays in appointing top judicial figures have only intensified public suspicion. The prime minister has denied any interference in judicial matters.

Adding fuel to the political fire, former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who recently turned 100, made a rare appearance at the rally.

Speaking to the crowd, Mahathir accused Anwar of weaponizing the justice system against political opponents while shielding allies from accountability. “Those who are innocent are charged, those who have done wrong are let go,” he declared, drawing loud applause from demonstrators.

As unrest continues to grow, Anwar faces one of the most significant challenges of his premiership.
