A powerful explosion shook the northern countryside of Idlib, Syria on Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring more than 70 others, according to state media and emergency officials. The blast occurred in the town of Maarrat Misrin, sending shockwaves through the region and triggering a swift emergency response.
Syria’s Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed Al-Saleh, confirmed the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter), noting that civil defence teams had rushed to the scene despite facing extreme hazards. Ongoing secondary explosions were reported, complicating rescue and evacuation operations and putting first responders at serious risk.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown, and authorities have not yet released a final casualty toll. However, images and reports from the scene suggest significant destruction and a chaotic environment as rescue teams work around the clock to reach survivors and clear the debris.
Al-Saleh urged residents to stay away from the blast site for their own safety, emphasizing that the area remains unstable due to continued detonations and difficult working conditions for emergency personnel.
