After a six-year silence, the Hasm Movement—widely regarded as the armed wing of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood—has reemerged with a new video message, raising fresh concerns about national security in Egypt.

The video marks the group’s first public appearance since 2019 and includes a direct threat to resume operations if Egyptian authorities do not release detainees linked to Islamist factions.

In the footage, members of the group issue a stern warning, claiming that they are prepared to reignite their campaign of violence unless their demands are met.

The Hasm Movement is officially designated as a terrorist organization by the Egyptian government and has been blamed for a string of attacks targeting security forces, judiciary figures, and infrastructure in the past.

Security analysts say the timing of the video is significant. It comes amid increased regional instability and heightened political tensions within Egypt. The reappearance of the group has prompted concerns that dormant extremist cells may be attempting to regroup or exploit the current atmosphere to gain renewed momentum.

Egyptian authorities have yet to issue an official response, but sources within the security establishment say surveillance and intelligence operations have been ramped up in light of the threat.

The Muslim Brotherhood, of which Hasm is believed to be a militant offshoot, has long denied ties to violent activity. However, the Egyptian state maintains that the group and its affiliates pose a serious threat to national security and stability.

As the video circulates online, questions are now being raised about the group’s current capabilities, potential international backing, and the effectiveness of past counterterrorism efforts. For many Egyptians, the threat serves as a stark reminder of the country’s long-standing struggle against domestic extremism—and the fragile balance between security and civil unrest.
