What began as a peaceful demonstration outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, escalated into violence over the weekend, resulting in six arrests and heightened tensions between protesters, police, and members of the media.
The protest, attended by more than 1,000 people, took place outside a hotel currently being used to house asylum seekers. Emotions ran high following the recent arrest and charging of an asylum seeker in connection with alleged sexual assaults in the area—a case that has stirred heated debate in the local community.

While the protest started peacefully, scenes later turned chaotic as bottles and smoke flares were hurled at police vehicles. According to Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow of Essex Police, the situation quickly devolved into what he described as “mindless thuggery,” overshadowing the initial tone of the demonstration.

In a separate incident during the protest, a legacy media reporter was reportedly forced out of the area by some attendees, highlighting growing distrust and hostility toward mainstream press coverage of immigration-related issues.
Police confirmed that six individuals were arrested in connection with the unrest, with further investigations ongoing. Authorities are now reviewing footage and collecting witness statements to identify those responsible for inciting violence and disrupting public order.
