A devastating tragedy struck the capital of Bangladesh on Monday after a military training jet crashed into a school campus in Dhaka, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 100 others, many of them critically.

The crash occurred at Milestone School and College, located in Uttara, a northern suburb of the city. Disturbing footage from the scene shows a massive blaze and thick black smoke rising above the school, as emergency services rushed to contain the fire and evacuate the wounded.

According to the Bangladeshi armed forces, the aircraft involved was a Chinese-made training jet belonging to the Bangladesh Air Force. It had taken off at 1:06 p.m. local time and crashed shortly thereafter, exploding on impact and igniting a large-scale fire across the school grounds. The pilot was confirmed dead at the scene.

The timing of the crash made the incident even more tragic, as hundreds of students were in the middle of exams or attending regular classes when the jet hit the campus. Local authorities confirmed that more than 50 people—many of them children—were immediately rushed to hospitals with severe burns and other injuries.

“At least 83 people are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals in Dhaka. Many of them are in critical condition,” said an official statement from the Dhaka city government. A doctor at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery also confirmed that a large number of patients were being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Rescue operations continued for hours as firefighters battled the flames and emergency teams searched for survivors. Military personnel quickly secured the area, and an investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched.

The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the nation, with an outpouring of grief from parents, educators, and citizens mourning the loss of young lives and the injuries inflicted on so many. As Bangladesh reels from this horrific event, calls are growing for greater safety oversight in military flight operations near civilian areas.
