Despite a nationwide ceasefire declared Saturday by the Syrian presidency, heavy armed clashes are still ongoing in the southern province of Suwayda between Bedouin tribal fighters and local armed groups. The continued violence underscores the deep-rooted instability in the region, even as efforts to restore calm take shape.

According to Syria’s state-run news agency SANA, internal security forces have begun deploying across Suwayda to enforce the ceasefire and stabilize the situation. Units have reportedly been positioned in key areas in and around the province in an attempt to halt the fighting and restore order.

However, the reality on the ground remains volatile. Intense gun battles were reported in several parts of Suwayda on Saturday, signaling resistance to the ceasefire terms or a breakdown in communication among warring factions. Local sources describe the fighting as some of the most serious the region has seen in months.

The Syrian government’s announcement of a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire came after days of escalating violence that threatened to engulf the Druze-majority province in a broader conflict. While the ceasefire aims to de-escalate tensions and prevent further bloodshed, its effectiveness will depend heavily on the willingness of local groups and tribal leaders to adhere to the agreement.

Suwayda, which has largely maintained a delicate autonomy throughout Syria’s civil war, has recently become a hotspot for unrest amid rising tribal tensions, economic grievances, and political frustration. The province’s strategic location and complex social fabric make conflict resolution particularly challenging.
