A devastating fire tore through a newly opened shopping mall in Kut, eastern Iraq, leaving at least 77 people dead or injured in one of the country’s deadliest urban disasters in recent years. The blaze, which broke out unexpectedly, quickly engulfed the multi-story complex, trapping shoppers and workers inside.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as flames spread rapidly through the building, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. Emergency services rushed to the scene, battling the inferno and working tirelessly to rescue those still trapped inside. Despite their efforts, the fire left a heavy toll on the local community.

The mall, which had only recently opened its doors, was seen as a symbol of economic revival for the region. Its destruction has now turned into a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need for stricter safety regulations and enforcement across commercial infrastructure in Iraq.
