Tensions are escalating in Iraq’s northern autonomous Kurdistan region following a wave of drone attacks that have targeted vital oil infrastructure. In the early hours of Wednesday, explosive-laden drones struck three oil fields in a coordinated assault that disrupted operations and deepened concerns over the region’s security.

The attacks, which occurred just a day after a similar strike forced the shutdown of a U.S.-operated oil facility, have now brought the total number of oil fields hit in Kurdistan to five in under a week. Kurdish counterterrorism forces confirmed the strikes and reported that although there were no casualties, some of the targeted sites suffered material damage.

Two of Wednesday’s attacks occurred almost simultaneously at the Peshkabir oil field, located in Zakho district and operated by Norwegian oil company DNO.

A third drone later hit the nearby Tawke oil field, also managed by DNO. Another drone targeted a separate facility operated by U.S.-based Hunt Oil in Dohuk province, but that attack reportedly caused neither injuries nor physical damage.

These incidents come amid a recent surge in unclaimed drone and rocket assaults across Iraq, with Kurdistan bearing the brunt of the escalation. While no group has stepped forward to claim responsibility, the series of targeted strikes suggest a coordinated effort to disrupt oil production and heighten instability in the region.

As the attacks persist, concerns are mounting over the safety of foreign-operated energy assets and the broader implications for Iraq’s oil-dependent economy. Security experts warn that if these incidents continue unchecked, they could discourage foreign investment and complicate energy production in one of Iraq’s most resource-rich areas.

Authorities in Kurdistan are ramping up counterterrorism measures, but the sudden uptick in drone activity underscores the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial systems in modern conflict zones — particularly in regions critical to global energy supply.
