A wave of solemnity swept through Daura, Katsina State, as prominent Nigerian political figures paid their respects following the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari. On Wednesday, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi visited Buhari’s family home in Daura to express their condolences.

Their visit came a day after Buhari was laid to rest in his hometown, following his passing on Sunday in London at the age of 82. Accompanied by former Governor of Kaduna State, the delegation visited the gravesite of the late leader, marking a rare moment of unity and reflection among Nigeria’s political class.

Buhari, who first ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, returned decades later to serve as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His legacy remains a complex and deeply discussed part of Nigeria’s modern political history.

On Tuesday morning, Buhari’s remains were flown into Nigeria, arriving at Katsina Airport with Vice President Kashim Shettima and Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. President Tinubu personally received the late president’s body, joined by a government delegation assembled to honor the nation’s former commander-in-chief.

Buhari was buried in accordance with Islamic rites in a quiet, deeply personal spot in the garden of his Daura residence—a place where he often spent time in reflection. His body, wrapped in the Nigerian flag, was wheeled to the grave on a military trolley, accompanied by full military honors.

A ceremonial gun salute echoed across the landscape, marking the final farewell to a man who once held the reins of Nigeria’s leadership in both military and civilian eras.

As condolences continue to pour in from across the country and beyond, Buhari’s death has triggered a period of national reflection, not only on his years in office but on the future of Nigeria’s political and democratic journey.
