Tensions in southern Syria have escalated sharply as government forces launched artillery fire from eastern Daraa toward the predominantly Druze city of Suwayda, according to local and regional sources.

The strikes come amid rising unrest and renewed friction between the Assad regime and members of the Druze minority, who have increasingly voiced opposition to government policies and security crackdowns.

Suwayda has historically maintained a delicate relationship with the Syrian government, largely staying neutral during much of the country’s civil war. However, recent months have seen growing anti-regime sentiment in the province, fueled by economic hardship, demands for civil rights, and frustration with Damascus’ central authority.

The Druze community — a religious minority with deep roots in Suwayda — has increasingly distanced itself from the Assad government, with several civil protests and calls for reform gaining traction. The latest artillery strikes appear to mark a significant shift in the regime’s posture, indicating a potentially more aggressive stance toward dissent in the south.
