One month after Israeli forces seized the Madleen aid vessel, a new humanitarian ship named Handala has departed from Syracuse Port in Sicily, Italy, in a bold effort to break the ongoing blockade on Gaza.
The launch of Handala marks a renewed attempt to challenge the Israeli naval blockade, which critics say has severely restricted the flow of essential goods and humanitarian relief to Palestinians in the besieged territory.

Organizers of the mission say Handala carries medical supplies, food, and other vital resources. More importantly, they emphasize, it carries a message of solidarity with the people of Gaza. “This is not just about delivering aid — it’s about standing against injustice,” one volunteer told reporters before departure.
Following the high-profile seizure of the Madleen by Israeli forces last month, concerns over the safety of the crew and cargo remain high. Still, those on board remain committed to their goal, knowing the risks involved.
