Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most prominent statesmen, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82. His death was confirmed on Sunday evening in a brief statement by his former special adviser, Garba Shehu.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London,” Shehu said.

Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 under a democratically elected government, also served earlier as the country’s military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985. The cause of death has not been disclosed, but sources confirm that the former president had been in London for several days receiving medical treatment before his passing.

The news of his death has sparked a nationwide wave of condolences, particularly from political leaders and allies. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who succeeded Buhari in office, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of his longtime associate.

In an official message delivered by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu extended his condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Additionally, Tinubu directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Katsina State, Buhari grew up in the care of his mother after losing his father at the age of four. He was known for his disciplined lifestyle and his deep-rooted belief in integrity and national service. His early military career, anti-corruption stance, and eventual return to politics as a civilian president shaped his image as a strong but controversial leader.

Buhari was married to Safinatu Yusuf from 1971 until her death in 1988. He later married Aisha Halilu in 1989. He is survived by ten children.

As the nation reflects on Buhari’s long and complex legacy — from military ruler to democratically elected president — tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria and the global community. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in the country’s political history.
