Taiwan’s Army has intensified its training for urban combat scenarios, preparing for the possibility of street-by-street fighting in the event of a Chinese invasion. The exercises mark a strategic shift in defense priorities, as the island nation braces for the growing threat of a potential conflict with Beijing.

Soldiers are being trained in house-clearing, ambush defense, and the protection of civilian infrastructure, reflecting a sobering reality: any large-scale conflict on Taiwanese soil may unfold not just along coastlines, but deep within the island’s urban centers.

Taiwanese military officials say the focus on urban warfare is essential to preparing for asymmetric defense, should China attempt to seize control of the island through force. Given the size and strength of China’s military, Taiwan’s strategy has increasingly leaned on the use of home-field advantage, mobility, and guerrilla-style resistance in populated areas.
