China’s DF-5B intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) remains one of the most powerful strategic weapons in its arsenal, capable of delivering devastating nuclear payloads across vast distances. The missile can carry warheads with an estimated yield of 3 to 4 megatons—more than 200 times the explosive power of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
With a range of approximately 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles), the DF-5B can strike targets across continents, including much of the United States, Europe, and parts of Africa. This long reach places it firmly among the most formidable land-based missiles in the world.

The DF-5B is part of China’s operational silo-based missile force. It is believed to be equipped with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), allowing a single missile to deliver several nuclear warheads to different targets simultaneously. This capability significantly enhances its strategic deterrent value.

Experts view the DF-5B as a symbol of China’s longstanding commitment to maintaining a credible second-strike capability. Although newer systems such as the DF-41 are now entering service, the DF-5B remains an important component of China’s nuclear triad.
