Tensions flared in the Khabat neighborhood of Erbil on Wednesday as clashes between Kurdish Peshmerga forces and local clan fighters escalated rapidly, threatening to destabilize the area in the heart of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
Khabat, located west of Erbil, has often been seen as a relatively stable area within the Kurdistan Region, making the sudden escalation particularly alarming. Security forces have moved to contain the unrest, but the situation remains volatile, with concerns growing over the potential for further violence.
