In a historic diplomatic moment, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome in Brasília on Tuesday, marking the first official State Visit to Brazil by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years.
The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, signifies a renewed push toward deepening bilateral ties and enhancing South-South cooperation.

The two leaders met at the Alvorada Palace, where Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by President Lula with a symbolic embrace. The ceremonial reception set the tone for a day of meaningful dialogue and high-level diplomatic engagement.

As part of the formal proceedings, both leaders introduced key delegates from their respective nations, underscoring mutual respect and shared commitment to collaborative progress.

PM Modi’s arrival in Brazil follows the conclusion of the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, held from July 6 to 7, where leaders from five major emerging economies gathered to discuss strategic partnerships and global issues.
Modi’s extended stay in Brazil for the State Visit further highlights India’s proactive approach in shaping multilateral relations and building strategic alliances in the Global South.

The highlight of the visit came when Prime Minister Modi was awarded the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, Brazil’s highest civilian honour.

The award was presented by President Lula in recognition of Modi’s outstanding contributions to India-Brazil relations and his efforts in fostering cooperation on international platforms. This prestigious accolade marks the 26th foreign award received by PM Modi since taking office in May 2014.

The visit marks a strategic shift in India’s global engagement—from a reactive participant to a forward-leaning actor advocating for common interests, sustainable development, and balanced global governance.
As India continues to build on its leadership role within the Global South, the deepening of diplomatic and economic ties with Brazil stands as a powerful symbol of mutual aspiration and shared global vision.
