A Ryanair flight preparing to depart from Palma de Mallorca Airport in Spain turned into a scene of panic and emergency response on Saturday after a fire alert forced an abrupt evacuation, leaving at least 18 passengers injured.

The incident occurred just as the Boeing 737 aircraft, bound for Manchester, was about to take off. A fire warning light was triggered in the cockpit, prompting an immediate halt to the flight and the activation of full emergency protocols. Although the alert later turned out to be a false alarm, the sudden scare caused a chaotic evacuation as passengers scrambled to exit the plane.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. Four ambulances—two basic life support units and two advanced units—were deployed by the regional emergency coordination centre. They were joined by airport firefighters and members of the Civil Guard to manage the evacuation and assist the injured.

According to officials, passengers exited the aircraft through emergency exits, with some jumping from the wings to the ground in a desperate effort to reach safety. In total, 18 people sustained injuries and required medical attention. Six were transported to local hospitals—three to Rotger Clinic and another three to Hospital Quironsalud Palmaplanas.

Ryanair later confirmed that the disruption was caused by a false fire warning. “Flight FR4052 from Palma to Manchester (4 July) was discontinued prior to takeoff after a fire warning light falsely activated,” a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement. “Passengers were disembarked using the inflatable slides and returned to the terminal.”

While no serious injuries have been reported, the incident raised concerns over aircraft safety systems and emergency evacuation protocols. Passengers described the experience as frightening and chaotic, with some still in shock after what was initially feared to be a real onboard fire.

The affected flight was later rescheduled, but the dramatic episode left many shaken and highlighted the unpredictable nature of air travel—even when the threat turns out to be a false alarm.
