After weeks of absence from the public eye, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made a rare appearance on Saturday night during an Ashura event in Tehran, marking his first public engagement since Israel’s large-scale military strikes against Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure last month.
Khamenei’s reemergence comes at a critical moment for Iran, as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of a devastating Israeli offensive that targeted key military installations and nuclear sites. The strikes reportedly inflicted significant damage and resulted in high-profile leadership casualties, further intensifying the regional conflict.

Throughout the escalation, Khamenei had remained out of public view, issuing only a few pre-recorded messages that offered limited insight into Iran’s next steps. His silence had fueled speculation about internal disarray and the toll the conflict may have taken on Iran’s leadership.

However, in a defiant tone last week, Khamenei proclaimed a “victory” despite the widespread damage, insisting that Iran would rapidly rebuild its nuclear capabilities and military assets. His appearance at the Ashura commemoration—a deeply symbolic and politically charged religious event in the Shiite calendar—was seen as an effort to reassert authority and rally national resilience.
