U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed he held a lengthy phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday morning, describing the conversation as unproductive amid intensifying tensions in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Speaking Thursday evening, Trump revealed that the war in Ukraine was a central focus of the discussion, especially in light of recent aerial assaults on Ukrainian territory.

“It was a pretty long call,” Trump noted, adding, “I’m not happy about that,” referring to the state of the conflict. “No, I didn’t make any progress with him today at all,” he admitted, suggesting that efforts to push for a ceasefire or peaceful resolution had stalled.

The call came on the heels of Trump’s decision to pause certain U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine—a move that has raised eyebrows internationally, especially as Ukraine battles a fresh wave of airstrikes. One of the key points of contention is the supply of Patriot missile systems, which Ukraine says are vital for its defense against Russia’s increasing aerial aggression.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking from Copenhagen during a diplomatic visit on Thursday, acknowledged Trump’s recent actions and expressed hope for direct dialogue. “I hope that maybe tomorrow or in close days I will speak to President Trump,” Zelensky told reporters, emphasizing the urgent need for U.S. support, particularly advanced air defense systems.

The Trump-Putin call and Zelensky’s public appeal underscore the high stakes and complex political dynamics surrounding the war. While Trump has long claimed he could swiftly end the conflict if returned to office, his latest remarks signal that achieving such a breakthrough may be far more difficult than anticipated.
