In a move that has sparked outrage and sorrow among many Syrians, the country’s Islamist-led government has destroyed a decades-old statue in Aleppo’s historic Saadallah al-Jabri Square, claiming it violated Islamic principles against idolatry.

The statue, long considered a cultural landmark in one of Aleppo’s most prominent public spaces, was removed and demolished under government orders.

Officials stated that the decision was based on strict interpretations of Islamic doctrine that prohibit the public display of statues, which they argue promote forms of worship forbidden in Islam.

Saadallah al-Jabri Square, named after a former Syrian prime minister, has long been a gathering place for both political rallies and everyday life. The now-destroyed monument was considered by many a familiar and unifying symbol in a city that has endured years of war, displacement, and reconstruction.
