The U.S. Senate has approved President Donald Trump’s sweeping domestic policy bill following a grueling 24-hour amendment session on the Senate floor. The final vote was deadlocked at 50-50, requiring Vice President JD Vance to cast the tie-breaking vote that propelled the bill forward.

The legislation, championed by Senate Majority Leader John Thune, secured just enough support from moderate Republicans after intense closed-door negotiations. The package now heads to the House of Representatives, where it is expected to face stiff resistance from Democrats and several fiscally conservative Republicans.
At the heart of Trump’s bill is a massive $4.5 trillion extension of tax cuts from his first term, aimed at bolstering economic growth and appeasing his base ahead of the 2026 midterms.

However, the proposed tax relief is offset by $1.2 trillion in spending cuts—primarily targeting Medicaid and federal nutrition assistance programs. Analysts estimate that up to 12 million low-income and disabled Americans could lose health coverage if the plan becomes law.

The bill also strips away billions of dollars in federal tax credits for green energy, a move that has sparked criticism from climate advocates.

In their place, the legislation allocates $350 billion toward ramping up border security and funding President Trump’s renewed mass migrant deportation initiative—a cornerstone of his 2024 reelection campaign.

During the “vote-a-rama,” Democrats introduced numerous amendments in an effort to protect key social programs and delay the cuts. Most were voted down along party lines.

Despite the political turbulence, President Trump remained confident, telling reporters, “It’s going to get in, it’s going to pass, and we’re going to be very happy.” He also indicated that he intends to sign the bill into law by Friday, aligning it with the July 4 Independence Day celebrations—a symbolic nod to what his administration calls a reclaiming of American priorities.
