Thailand’s political landscape has been shaken as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended from her duties following a ruling by the country’s top court. The decision comes in the wake of an ethics investigation triggered by a leaked phone call between Paetongtarn and Cambodia’s former leader, Hun Sen.

In a statement following the court’s suspension order, Paetongtarn acknowledged the ruling with respect and announced she would immediately cease performing her official duties. “I respectfully accept the court’s decision. From this moment, I will stop carrying out my responsibilities,” she said. “I do not know for how long, but I will use the 15-day period granted to offer a full clarification.”

The leaked audio has stirred significant controversy, especially after it surfaced that her comments in the recording were perceived as dismissive toward the Thai military. The call allegedly took place after deadly clashes broke out along the Thai-Cambodian border in May, and critics argue that her statements may have violated the constitution and breached ethical standards.

In her defense, Paetongtarn insisted her intentions were patriotic. “I want the public to know that my actions came from a place of genuine concern—for national sovereignty, for the safety of our soldiers, and for the peace of our country,” she said. “If my methods offended anyone, I apologize.”

Despite her explanation, the political fallout has been swift. The leaked conversation has sparked public outrage, leading to widespread protests in Bangkok, where demonstrators are calling for her resignation. Many argue that her remarks undermined confidence in the military at a time of national tension and security concerns.

As the 15-day period for her response begins, the future of Paetongtarn’s leadership remains uncertain. The ethics panel’s decision could lead to her removal from office depending on the outcome of the investigation. Meanwhile, the controversy continues to fuel a heated national debate about accountability, civil-military relations, and political transparency in Thailand.
