Tensions are rising between Azerbaijan and Russia following the arrest of two senior journalists from Sputnik Azerbaijan in the capital, Baku. Azerbaijani authorities have detained Igor Kartavykh, director of Sputnik Azerbaijan, and Yevgeny Belousov, the agency’s editor-in-chief, on what Russian media are calling “absurd” charges of espionage.
According to reports from Sputnik and RIA Novosti, the journalists were accused of acting as agents for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) — a claim the news agency has flatly denied.

Both Kartavykh and Belousov were taken into custody earlier today, with Azerbaijani law enforcement reportedly preventing Russian embassy officials from contacting the detained media personnel.

The arrests have sparked alarm within Russian media circles, with Sputnik describing the accusations as baseless and politically motivated. The agency stated that it is actively working to establish communication with the journalists and seeking legal support on the ground.
