Grief and patriotism filled the streets of Idaho as hundreds of residents lined up, many waving American flags, to pay tribute to two firefighters tragically killed in a violent ambush while responding to a wildfire. The attack, which authorities have called a “total ambush,” unfolded on Sunday afternoon near Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d’Alene.
According to officials, the harrowing incident began when emergency crews responded to reports of a fire in the area. As firefighters and law enforcement arrived, a lone gunman—who authorities say intentionally set the blaze—opened fire on the responders in a premeditated attack that lasted several hours.

Two firefighters lost their lives, and a third was wounded in the assault. The suspect, who was believed to be acting alone, later died near the scene. Sheriff Bob Norris confirmed that members of the SWAT team ultimately located the shooter’s body after hours of coordinated response.

First responders came under sniper fire during the chaos, which made immediate rescue efforts dangerous and challenging. The fire, which initially covered a few acres, quickly spread to over 20 acres and continued to burn into Sunday night.

“This was an evil act, a calculated attack against the very people who run toward danger to protect others,” Sheriff Norris said. “Our community is heartbroken, but we are also united in honoring the bravery of those we lost.”

The streets of Coeur d’Alene were lined with mourners in the aftermath, holding flags and signs to show respect for the fallen heroes. Many stood in silence as fire trucks and police vehicles drove past in a solemn procession, honoring their colleagues who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
This incident has sparked renewed concern over the safety of first responders who are increasingly being put in harm’s way, not just by natural disasters, but by violent attacks while on duty. Investigations into the motive and planning behind the ambush are ongoing.

As Idaho mourns, tributes have poured in from across the country, honoring the courage and sacrifice of the firefighters who gave their lives while serving their community.
